Construction and Design Project Manager

MD² is building new sites nationwide – and is looking for someone to lead the effort.

You know a health-care company is serious about expanding its footprint when its next senior hire is for a … construction-project manager.

After all, anyone and everyone in the business world can generate reams of PR about “exciting growth prospects” and “future dynamism” and what-have-you. But when you get down to it, one of the most tangible signs of actual growth is a commitment to, you know, building something – as in, a place for a business to actually do business.

And that’s exactly what MD² (pronounced “MD squared,” FYI) is doing right now. Since its founding in 1996, this Bellevue-based company has been a leader in what’s known as concierge medicine, “specifically designed,” as the company writes in its job description, “to address the unique and inherent lifestyle demands of a high-net-worth patient population.”

To serve that population, MD² has opened locations not only in Bellevue and Seattle, but also in other centers of affluence nationwide. It literally has facilities on both Park Avenue and Madison Avenue in New York City, as well as in Beverly Hills; Silicon Valley; Inside-the-Beltway Northern Virginia; and other power nodes on both coasts and in a few spots between. (MD²’s newest outpost is in Austin, yet another sign of that town’s full arrival in the big leagues.)

More MD² offices are on the way, and the company is seeking a Construction and Design Project Manager to supervise their development. “You will play a critical role in the growth of our company, through the build out of high-end concierge medical offices,” the company writes. “You will build annually 3-5 new office[s] per year, each approximately 2,500 square feet.”

As you might imagine, these are no cookie-cutter strip-mall docboxes we’re talking about here. The company is very specifically seeking someone capable of “seamless integration between the brand, design, and construction of existing spaces into custom designed medical clinics with high end finishes. You will collaborate with and coordinate the work of [the] consulting architect, general contractor, and designer, to create uniquely beautiful workspaces.”

I’m leaning a bit more heavily than normal in this announcement on the employer’s own words, simply because MD² is such a unique company, with a very strong sense of its own identity and its own place in the market. They know exactly who their customers are – and what those customers want. This is not a role for just any construction manager. You’re not only building physical spaces; you’re building a very particular brand. I’m not shocked to see that this role reports directly to the CEO.

Responsibilities include new-site development; architectural approvals; contractor selection; vendor management; code compliance; existing-site maintenance; and other facets of construction and design. The role is based in the Seattle area but requires a fair amount of nationwide travel.

MD² is looking for construction managers with “knowledge, skills and abilities related to high-end construction projects.” Specifically, it seeks at least eight years’ experience in this kind of work; along with either a bachelor’s degree in construction management or 10 years of progressive work experience in the field. A Certified Construction Manager (CCM) designation is a plus, but not required.

For the right person, this could be a fascinating opportunity. If that person might be you, do let me know!
